dr. ben carson has made it clear he has no desire to fit into the mold of a washington politician. dr. carson joins us now. welcome back to "fox news sunday." >> thank you. good to be here. >> first of all, especially on this mother's day, how is your mom, who i know is ill? briefly, looking back, what was the greatest impact she's had on your life. >>> thank you for asking. thank you for the millions of people who have started praying for her. she's starting to eat again. we thought she was gone and she started eating again. she had the biggest impact of any human being on my life because she refused to be a victim and she refused to let me and my brother be victims. and that was really the key. and she made us do things we didn't wanted to do. she reminds me of that baltimore mother who went out and got her son off the streets. that would have been her. it made a huge difference. >> you grew up in dire poverty in inner city detroit. >> that's right. never had money for anything. but i tell you what did really work, books. between the covers of those books i could go anyplace, be anybo

dr. ben carson formally announced they are joining the race. our political reporter is live with a closer look at the candidates. hey, scott. scott: these are two interesting additions to the race. for significant reasons. neither ben carson nor carly fiorina have ever held elected office. but that does not mean that they can't play significant roles in this upcoming election. here is why. despite the fact that the polling is currently low dr. ben carson of course, the retired famous neurosurgeon now the only african-american candidate. he adds instant diversity to the g.o.p. options. an outspoken critic of president obama. that is one area his voice will carry a lot of weight. carly fiorina, the former hewlett-packard executive can more easily and more comfortably perhaps attack hillary clinton than a male candidate might be able to do. both of them saying they might lack the political experience but that is a benefit, because that is not, they claim, what people want. ben: i'm probably never going to be politically correct because i'm not a p

dr. ben carson is a unique personality. conviction politician. he actually believes in what he says. over 30 years, neurosurgeon babies conjoined at the head. he is the one that did that. he's a superstar. he looks at the political environment around him and is aghast at what he sees. he says i am not politically correct. he certainly is not because he thinks that the way the government runs health care and runs inter ss inner cities is terrible. he is a rookie politician and just says what's on his -- he is a free thinker and sometimes he says thing that is really rub people the wrong way and the press can use that against him. >> same with carly fiorina. >> that's the knock. it's tough she has never won a serious election. >> along with carson she is an excellent communicator. these are both people who can speak to the average person. she can even talk about regulation and bring it down to the kitchen table level, which is a crying need in this country. it's a big problem, why we're not growing in some parts. >> these two should be heard. i'm glad they're in. >> they have idea. >>

dr. ben carson, and carly fiorina all expected to jump into the race this week. bring the total number of official gop presidential contenders to six. jamie weinstein is the senior editor of the daily caller. he joins us to discuss all this. carly fiorina lost the senate race. can she win the presidency? >> it's hard to see how she can go from losing big in california in a senate race to winning her first office first the nomination for the white house for the republican side and then the presidency. you know a lot of people suspect that's not what she's doing when she enters the race here. a lot of people think she may be trying to angle for the vice presidential spot on a republican ticket. for that she's a very attractive candidate. she has been auditioning in a way by being the attack dog against hillary clinton. that would blunt any kind of calls that the republican ticket is being sexist by going after certain aspects of hillary clinton's candidacy because, of course carly herself is a woman. so she's a very accomplished ceo of hp. she would be a very intri
